Juniors Counseling Info

During the rigorous Junior year, the Academic and College Counseling department supports student development in a variety of ways that include: the Junior College Project in collaboration with the English Department, navigating Naviance, creating college lists, exploring career and major options, building a strong academic resume, searching for scholarships and much more…

Naviance Student

Naviance Student organizes personal data, maintains active college lists, aids in searching for scholarships, explores careers, and tracks the application process. It is also a great way to stay connected to your counselor. Important information is often sent from the ACC Office such as dates and times of college visits, directions for obtaining letters of recommendations, upcoming deadlines, test prep information, etc. Please make sure that you check Naviance Student often.

Junior College Project

Research, plan and prepare for the application process in the fall.  Working with their English teacher, Juniors will explore the college process and walk through all aspects of applying to college. Check out the PowerPoint to help you build your list.

PSAT/SAT/ACT

The last PSAT takes place in October of your junior year this is an opportunity to qualify for NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Competition). Qualifying for a national merit scholarship is extremely difficult, but very possible as we've had many semi-finalists and a few finalists; however, we encourage all of our students to always do their best.

Now is the time to create a timeline for test taking…plan ahead by taking the FREE Revolution Prep practice tests offered on campus each semester. You can also take a prep course, study diligently from a book, or use free online practice test through Kaplan or Khan Academy. We encourage juniors to take at least one SAT/ACT .

College Planning

Begin researching different colleges through College Search or Super Match to create a working list. This list changes as your preferences change throughout the year, over the summer, and into the fall of your senior year. Make a list of factors that are important to you and plug those factors into your college search to see what type of schools are matched to these outcomes. This can include...majors, campus activities, graduation and retention rates, football team, religion, etc. Have fun creating this list because it’s ongoing and not permanent.

You can also get a wealth of information from the College Rep Visits who visit campus at lunch in the senior lunch area, going on a school promoted College Tour in the fall and spring semesters, attending a NACAC National College Fair or any local college fairs available, visiting colleges and universities and completing the Junior College Project. This will help narrow your working college list and prepare you for your applying list and the college admissions process during your senior year.

College Athletics

If you’re an athlete that’s always dreamed of playing college athletics and have been contacted by college coaches, please let your counselor know so that they can assist you in the athletics process which is a little different for each sport.

Any athlete interested in playing a sport in college should register the NCAA Eligibility or NAIA form through the correct Eligibility Center. Use the BMHS school code: 053-512. Visit the Main Office and speak the school registrar, Mrs. Mitchell to request an official transcript (fee is $5) be sent to the NCAA/NAIA Eligibility Center after the completion of your 6th semester.

For NCAA, go to NCAA Eligibility Center Login and register online. NAIA Official Website: www.playnaia.org
