Memorial and Honorary Gifts
A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) allows those 70½ years old or older to donate up to $105,000 total to a non-profit, such as Bishop Montgomery, directly from a taxable IRA instead of taking their required minimum distributions.
Individuals who hold Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are required to take RMDs each year beginning at age 73 (even if they don’t need or want the funds). That same required minimum distribution increases the IRA holder’s total taxable income.
QCDs (also called IRA charitable distributions or IRA charitable rollovers) enable individuals to fulfill their required minimum distribution by a direct transfer of up to $105,000 to charity. They can also be used to support multiple charities, as long as the sum of the distributions is within the $105,000 limit. But because QCDs don’t increase taxable income, both higher tax rates and phaseouts can be avoided.
Donors who wish to make a QCD to Bishop Montgomery may do so electronically, directly to BMHS or by check made payable to Bishop Montgomery. We encourage donors to speak to their financial advisor.
Stocks may be transferred directly to the Archdiocese for the benefit of Bishop Montgomery. These gifts will not affect your cash flow, and they provide the following tax benefits:
- A possible charitable deduction to help you save on taxes
- Bypass of federal and state capital gains taxes
- Avoidance of the tax on net investment income
From a tax perspective, a gift of appreciated assets makes good sense. You can make the capital gains taxes optional, achieve significant tax savings and support our programs.

"While I was a student, Bishop provided everything that was important to me - a great college prep education , Catholic values , teachers who truly cared, coaches that made you work hard and taught you what teamwork is all about.
BMHS taught me to work hard and treat others with respect and always do your best. I’ve tried to carry that thought my life and that why I give back."
