All about sentences! This will have a bit of review, so hang in there.

welcome back students today we're going to be talking about syntax I've actually been able to break this power play into two separate videos the First videos going to be a lot of review hopefully you know all of these terms will talk about him in terms of rhetoric but it's really the a video that's going to have the fun stuff so bear with me first off is the order of words in a sentence turn it also the length of the sentence and if he talked about a text you might use syntax in the same way as you used it which means you can talk about the syntax of one sentence or addiction of one word choice but you can also use it to characterize the sword of writing in the text send texts also the way an author chooses to join words into phrases Clauses and sentences and this one is the first type of sentence the declarative sentence in this is exactly what you've refused since I don't know second grade first grade and a declarative sentence makes statements and text using a bunch of declarative sentences is going to see him in for it informative analytical same objective though not necessarily because you can declare things in your own personal emotions so from one of our know it's a rhetorical question because the implied answer is no they don't have any enemies here liver I want to point out that rhetorical questions are just a small subset of interrogative sentences most of the questions that you're to encounter when you're reading essays or actually just questions right because they're not going to apply an answer there asking questions so I didn't if sentence would also be what's in the box I'm not implying an answer with that so if you wanted to talk about that in terms of my speech right now you could say an interrogative sentence or question you when it's a rhetorical question it's still worth observing if I'm using a lot of that and of course the answer to what llebroc Shake It Up Hobby why don't we have exclamatory sentences and those are sentences or fragments that doesn't seem right that is an exclamation And it contained can base passion and emotion so as we know Pearl was very passionate about the truth so he she saying to Dimmesdale that was not fooled that was not true it's very passionate with feel that emotion  alright this is not a sentence type this is just a word I want you now and it is antecedents antecedent is the word phrase or Clause referred to by a pronoun and the reason why I want you to know well there to the first is occasionally in multiple choice section of AP test you might get a question like what is the ants sea Dance of the bolded pronoun it for something like this but it is the Grandeur of all truth which can occupy a very high and human interest but it is never absolutely novel to the an antecedent is it is because on your papers I'm probably putting a lot of pronoun antecedent agreement if I grade on turn it in it'll say p / a agreement if I'm grading right hand I generally Circle to work and show that one is plural and one is singular what I mean here is if you say something like best student wonders where they left their book that doesn't have pronoun-antecedent agreement because students is killer and they is plural also including myself is when they say everyone is singular there is plural I technically should say everyone should be in his or her desk so you always want to make sure that those match Austin when you write really long sentences they stop matching because you forget  not going to talk about Clauses these aren't sentence thanks but they're useful to know for the next sentence types as I hope you already know is a grammatical unit that contains a subject and a verb if it's an independent or in Clause it expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence if it's dependent or subordinate it cannot stand alone as a sentence and must be accompanied by an in cat claws or subordinate clauses will start with which or that or although or because and those by themselves right because of the rain that's not a sentence but because of the rain, they ran inside is a sense because it has the subordinate clause and then the independent clause they ran inside and stand alone but your job if you have a sentence with subordinate and independent clause is to consider what are why the author subordinates  consider what or why the office bored makes one element that doesn't make sense I think I meant to say consider what the author subordinates subordinates and why and we talked about that when we are going over thesis statements this board class is less important so why is that the less important parts why are they trying attention to the independent clause and of course you want to be aware of this in your own writing so for instance  if someone says so I have one person that says I want on the fairest real that went really high there I went on the ferris wheel is independent and that went really high is subordinate and then the ferris real that I wrote that I rode went really hot on that one is the ferris wheel went really high as the independent part that I wrote is Sabor so think about how that changes the meaning for the first one it's like it's this guy and he's so proud of himself right he's emphasizing when he's prioritizing his that he went on the fair who else won on the ferris wheel in the Lehigh and then this one it's like the ferris wheel went really high is the main cause that I rode is kind of an afterthought that's almost like they're analyzing it oh yes that's really high in contrast to the Merry-Go-Round which is somewhat low so the difference what you subordinate and what you leave independent  simple sentence really simple subject and a verb so the adorable adorable puppy what's up on Miss writers lap he's actually behind me but he's pretty adorable and this is the fifth type of sentence as an example obviously rhetorical effective this is that it seems simple easy to understand probably kind of intended for you reversal or young or uneducated audience and so that's totally me it's not really but I kind of feel like I could have looked like when I was younger and there were a bunch of pictures of her with dogs so that's pretty awesome and then the next type of sentences compound sentences and compound sentences independent clauses joined by a coordinate conjunction which can be and but or so for their few others you can look I'm over by semi colon so one example is the ice cream was delicious semicolon it was exactly what I wanted and did not example we have a complete sentence on both sides of the semicolon otherwise it be a fragment it has to have an independent clause on both side sites but I've joined it together with a semicolon instead of a. Because I want to demonstrate just how closely related they are having delicious ice cream filled exactly what I wanted okay the other example is from fantasy I used to have before I got Casper and it was that I would be driving home and it be raining and then there be this poor shaking puppy on the side of the road and I would have to adopt it and so here is the story the puppy was cold and wet, but it was happy to be safe in my car  and stare because I have an independent clause on both sides I need to have , but complex sentence independent clause and one or more subordinate clauses so you're totally expecting that this sentence why do barrel out puppies or ice cream while you're right so you're totally expecting is an independent clause that this sentence is going to be a puppies are ice cream is subordinate I Can't Stand Alone by putting them together I've made a complex sentence and then compound complex sentence it contains two or more principal Clauses and one or more subordinate clause so it just has everything going on compounds to independent and then let's just the ruins of subordinate to so when the video is over  right now students will answer a few questions but they won't be that hard so that's compound-complex because when the video is over his that's the thing I added which is almost right now is also subordinate and independent clauses students Lancer few questions and they won't be that hard I joined together with the, but and so that's a compound complex sentence why do I want you to are those we'll talk about it a little more in the next video but I'm starting to mark your papers with a lot of comments about varying syntax that means that I don't want you to just use simple sentences I don't even want you to just use compound sentences or compound complex it makes it much more interesting for your reader if you very your sentence but also phileas we go on with these videos so that the length of your sentence serves a purpose that's directly tied to the contents of the sentence and we'll talk about more how can do that later and I think the school bus does something is this video you've learned eight different sentence types you'll learn some more on the next video now go out there and use rhetoric well
