Mrs. Amy Adams (Hendry)

About Me:

I am in my 18th year of teaching and in my 11th year of teaching at Bishop Montgomery. Prior to Bishop, I taught at Our Lady of Guadalupe for 7 years teaching Kindergarten and 4th grade. Here at Bishop, I serve as the Director of Campus Ministry. I coordinate and run the retreat programs in addition to teaching the Campus Ministry class. I hold a CA Clear Multiple Subject Credential and received my Religion Certification through the Diocese of Los Angeles. 

Philosophy of Education:

My philosophy of teaching basically follows the idea expressed in the statement, “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” Education is not just about getting students to Harvard and Heaven; I want them to experience a glimpse of Heaven on earth. For me, teaching is about enlightening minds so that students can make a difference in the world and directing hearts so that they can find Christ in one another. When students learn to recognize Christ in each other, they are seeing a small piece of Heaven. It is then that their education outside the classroom truly begins.

All the knowledge in the world will not be meaningful if a person does not know how to use it. A child might know all the sounds and letters, but without examples of how language is used, that child cannot communicate. A young adult may know what is right and wrong but may not know how to make the right choice independently.

In my teaching, I implore my students to look not merely at who is right or wrong, but at what is right and what is true. I strive to help my students seek truth and beauty in the world by recognizing the image and likeness of God in one another. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. describes true education when he says, “Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.”
In a world filled with people driven to achieve success at any cost, I hope my students discover that true success is based more on the lives they touch and affect than on how much they earn or receive. As Campus Minister, I strive to help the students in my class become peer leaders. I hope they serve their peers and help others recognize the talents and gifts God has given them.

Work Experience:

Since 2009, I have been pursuing my passion of teaching. Until 2016, I taught kindergarten and then fourth grade at Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Hermosa Beach. From there, I was asked to return to my Alma Mater and teach theology. I now am the Director of Campus Ministry, the Theology Department Chair, and teach the senior Campus Ministry course. I am honored to serve the Lord by serving our school community.
