Mission Statement:
The mission of the BMHS Athletic Training team, in alignment with the core values of Bishop Montgomery High School, is to promote the safety, health, and well-being of all student-athletes. We uphold the principles of faith and education while providing equitable, holistic care rooted in evidence-based practice. Our goal is to educate and empower student-athletes to participate safely and return to sport with confidence.
Our athletic training staff is dedicated to delivering high-quality care with professionalism and compassion—whether responding to emergencies, performing evaluations, providing follow-up treatment, or designing individualized rehabilitation programs. We also equip student-athletes with the knowledge, tools, and resources needed for optimal performance on and off the field.
What is Athletic Training/Athletic Trainer?
An Athletic Trainer (AT) is a certified health care professional who specializes in preventing injuries, recognizing and evaluating medical conditions, providing immediate and emergency care, and helping students recover through treatment and rehabilitation. While many people think ATs only work with sports teams, they also work in many other settings such as the military, hospitals, industrial workplaces, and health clinics.
Athletic Trainers support students by helping them manage injuries and safely return to sports, school activities, or everyday life. ATs often work with a student from the moment an injury happens until they are fully recovered, guiding them through rehabilitation and monitoring their safety every step of the way. They also communicate with parents, coaches, school staff, and other health care providers to ensure each student receives coordinated, consistent care.
To become a Certified Athletic Trainer one must earn a bachelors or masters degree from an accredited athletic training education program and pass a comprehensive exam administered by the Board of Certification. Once certified, they must meet additional continuing education units to remain certified. For more information on athletic training visit the National Athletic Trainers’ Association website at nata.org.

General Injury Guidelines
Injuries should be reported to a coach and/or Athletic Trainer. Serious injuries should be seen by a physician. Athletes who are seen by a physician are under the care of that physician until that physician clears them to resume playing/practicing.
To return to practice, athletes must turn in a "Doctor’s note/Release to return to Sports” to the Athletic Training Room. Athletic Trainer will provide notes to coaches for injured athletes to return to practice.
Injuries, such as sprains and strains, should be iced for 15-20 minutes and wait 2 hours between icing sessions. Icing 3 times per day is recommended, especially for new injuries. A bag of frozen peas makes a nice ice pack. Avoid heat for the first 24-48 hours following an injury. Avoid ibuprofen and aspirin for the first 48 hours following a head injury.
