BMHS Junior Prepares for Medical Career
Bishop Montgomery High School is home to many outstanding and talented students who, each day, are in search of their Magnum Opus, or their "great work." They are on a journey, both on campus and off, to discover what it is they are called to do; they strive to be the very best people that they can be each and every day. Senior Justina Breen '15 is well on her way to finding her Magnum Opus.
When asked to list the top schools she would like to attend after high school, Bishop Montgomery senior Justina Breen '15 said, "USC or another elite four-year university." Breen is also interested in attending USC's Keck School of Medicine to study neurology following her undergraduate work is complete. At BMHS, Breen is an outstanding student who is involved in both student government and athletics. She is a member of the girls' soccer team and this year, she is the ASB Vice-President. Breen is also doing all that she can outside of school to gain the experience she needs to succeed after high school.

As a junior, she spent two weeks shadowing Dr. Nerses Sanossian, Assistant Professor of Neurology and Associate Director of the Neurocritical Care/Stroke Section at USC's Keck School of Medicine. Not only did she get a first-hand look into the field of neurology, but she had her name published as part of a collection of papers by Dr. Sanossian. The topic of the paper in which she was named centered around the quality and type of care received at primary stroke centers. For Breen, learning about the effects of a stroke and the care that is available to these patients is one of the things that interests her the most about neurology.
A major part of her role in following Dr. Sanossian involved organizing documents as they pertained to the care of the stroke patients. "My favorite part of my time with Dr. Sanossian was seeing him interact with his patients," states Breen. "It was inspiring to see that you can have such a huge impact in people's lives."
Breen continues to work toward her goal of becoming a doctor of neurology. This past summer, she continued her work with Dr. Sanossian, observed three brain surgeries, and contributed on another research paper regarding stroke care. It is an experience she looks forward to on her journey to find her Magnum Opus.
