Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Joseph played football, basketball, and baseball at BMHS and was an accomplished surfer, both as a student and still today. On the football field, he was named 1962 All-Camino Real League. He went on to play football at El Camino College (1963-1964) and Long Beach State (1965-1966). He played four years of baseball and spent three years on the basketball team. While a student at BMHS, Joseph placed 3rd at the 1962 US Surfing Championships. He is one of the first BMHS graduates to serve in Vietnam. He has been inducted into several surfing Halls of Fame, including induction in 2004 to the Hermosa Beach Surfers Walk of Fame. He has served as director of the South Bay Surf League for the last 14 years. In 1970, he established the first surfing class for PE credit at El Segundo High School and, in 1972, established the first city-run surf camp in Manhattan Beach. In 2005, he was inducted into the El Camino College Athletic Hall of Fame.

 

Dan Graham ’67

Graham is one of the most decorated athletes in BMHS history. He competed in football, basketball, baseball and excelled in all three. On the football field, he played three years as the varsity quarterback. In 1965, he was named All-Camino Real League, City Player of the Year, and All-CIF 2nd Team Offense. In 1966, he was named All-Camino Real League, City Player of the Year, South Bay Player of the Year, and CIF Player of the Year. He was named an All American in 1966. For his career, he went 233-412 with 3,751 passing yards and 47 TD’s. On the baseball field, he played all four years on the varsity team. In 1967, he was the South Bay Player of the Year and the CIF Player of the Year, and led the Knights to the CIF AA title. Following graduation, he was drafted in the 2nd round by the Boston Red Sox. He played both football and baseball at UCLA.

 

A three sport athlete, Patterson played football, basketball, and baseball at BMHS. On the football field, he was named All-Camino Real League in 1966. In 1967, he was named to the All-Camino Real League on both offense and defense, and was named All-South Bay. In basketball, Patterson was a member of the 1967-68 team that won the CIF title. During that season, he was named 1st Team All-Camino Real League and 2nd Team All-CIF. He was also a member of the 1967 CIF Championship baseball team.

 

Bordley is arguably the greatest baseball player in BMHS history. He also played three years on the varsity basketball team. On the diamond, Bordley won numerous awards. As a sophomore in 1974, he was named 2nd Team All-League. As a junior, Bordley led the Knights to the CIF title by winning the deciding game against Lynwood 1-0 in Dodger Stadium. That year, he was named Camino Real League Co-Player of the Year, Daily Breeze Player of the Year, and CIF Player of the Year. As a senior, he was named All-Camino Real League and, once again, CIF Player of the Year. He holds virtually every single season pitching record at BMHS, including games started (17), complete games (14), innings pitched (115.2), strikeouts (176) and wins (16) - all in 1975. Following graduation he was drafted in the 1st round (4th overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers but opted to attend USC. At USC, Bordley went a combined 26-2 and was named a 1st Team All-American in both 1977 and 1978. In 1978, he won the deciding game in the College World Series to clinch the national title for USC. He pitched in the Major Leagues for the San Francisco Giants, compiling a career record of 2-3 with a 4.70 ERA.

 

Fernandez is, without a doubt, the greatest female tennis player in BMHS history. Not only was she the Santa Fe League MVP in 1975, 1976 and 1977, but she was also the CIF Player of the Year for all three years. She was the CIF Singles Champion in 1975 and 1976 and was ranked #8 nationally in 1976. In 1977, she won the CIF Doubles title with her twin sister, Anna Lucia and led the Lady Knights to the 1977 CIF team title. The 1977-78 squad was named CIF State Team of the Year by Cal Hi Sports. Following BMHS, Fernandez was a 3-time All-American at USC (1979-1981)and won the 1981 AIAW singles title (NCAA championship). She also led USC to back-to-back NCAA team titles in 1979 and 1980 and he was a member of the Federation Team Cup from 1979-1981. As a professional, Fernandez won 5 doubles titles on the WTA tour from 1984-1987. She competed in all four Grand Slam events in tennis. Her highest finish in singles came in the 1978 US Open where she advanced to the round of 32. Her highest Grand Slam finish in doubles came at the 1986 Wimbledon Championships where she advanced to the round of 16.  

 

Schwartzman enters the BMHS Hall of Fame as both an athlete and a coach. In fact, she is the only person in BMHS history to win a CIF title as both a player and a coach. As an athlete, she played all four years on the varsity soccer team, earning All-CIF honors as a sophomore, junior and senior. As a sophomore in 1983-84, she was named 2nd Team All-CIF. As a junior, she was named 1st Team All-CIF. Senior year, Schwartzman was the 1985-86 CIF Offensive Player of the Year when the Lady Knights won the CIF title. She returned in 1991 as the head soccer coach. During her three years, BMHS won three Mission League titles. In 1993-94, she led the Lady Knights to the CIF Championship and they finished the season with an impressive 21-2-2 record. She was named both CIF and Daily Breeze Coach of the Year in 1993-94. She attended Brown University where she was a 4-year letterwinner in soccer and softball, and was a member of a soccer team that won four Ivy League titles. She is currently the Head Women's Soccer Coach at the University of New Mexico.

 

Coach George Swade, Coach/Athletic Director 

Swade is one of the winningest football coaches in school history. He served as head football coach from 1962-1968 and compiled a record of 44-23. He led the Knights to two Camino Real League titles in 1966 and 1968 (1966 was first football league title at BMHS) and two CIF playoff appearances (1966 and 1968). He served as Athletic Director at BMHS from 1964-1969 and taught PE, Driver’s Education and served as PE Department Chair. He has coached for many years at the professional and collegiate level, most recently as Head Football Coach at Los Angeles Harbor College. He is also the founder of the Annual Lions' Football Game held in the South Bay.

 

King is truly a pioneer in BMHS athletics, helping to establish many girls' sports at Bishop Montgomery. She coached softball, girls' basketball and girls' tennis at BMHS from 1962-1977. She also led the basketball team to one league title and the softball team to an amazing 10 consecutive league championships. King also moderated the drill team, served as Girls' Athletic Director, and taught Algebra, Geometry, PE and Driver’s Education. She currently serves as a volleyball referee at the high school and college level and for many years served as the girls' volleyball officials assignor in the South Bay.

 

Mr. Roach, who passed away in September 2010, will forever be known as "The Voice of the Knights." He served as the football and basketball announcer from 1962-1982 while his 10 children attended BMHS. He served as president and booster club member for 25 years and helped organize many fundraising events, dinners and fiestas. Seven sons played football at BMHS (two received Division I scholarships), one son was a co-captain on the 1967-68 CIF championship basketball team, and one daughter was a member of the 1977 CIF championship tennis team. After his youngest son Robert died, Mr. Roach and his wife, Doris, established a scholarship endowment at BMHS for tuition assistance. He and Doris were recently inducted into the Bishop Montgomery Hall of Fame.

 

The 1967 baseball team has the distinction of being the first team in school history to win a CIF title in any sport. Coached by Marv Wood, the Knights defeated Pomona 6-2 in the CIF AA title game held at El Camino College. They finished 21-3 overall and a perfect 15-0 in the Camino Real League.
