Torrance, CA (June 14, 2021):
Bishop Montgomery is pleased to announce that longtime boys’ basketball coach Doug Mitchell has been named the new Athletic Director, replacing Eric Wood, who is moving to Utah. Mitchell will continue to serve as head coach of the boys’ basketball program, a position he has held since 1989-90. In addition to his basketball duties, Mitchell previously served as head academic guidance counselor.

Mitchell is in his 32nd year as head coach of the boys’ basketball program. During his tenure, the Knights have qualified for the CIF-SS playoffs each year and Mitchell has guided BMHS to 20 league championships, six CIF-SS titles and four California State titles, including the prestigious Open Division title in 2016-17. He has a record at BMHS of 728-201 for a .784 winning percentage. Prior to coming to BMHS, Mitchell coached for two seasons at his alma mater, South Torrance High School. His 739 career wins place him in 17th place in boys’ basketball state history.

“I’m excited for this new opportunity,” says Mitchell. “I think I’ll bring a unique perspective to the position because I have worked as a teacher, coach and academic counselor at Bishop Montgomery and I am also a parent of two graduates. Those experiences have helped shape me into who I am today.”

Mitchell officially took over as Athletic Director on June 15.
