Torrance, CA (May 27, 2021): The Bishop Montgomery baseball team clinched the Camino Real League title yesterday with their 7-0 win over Mary Star at a game played at home. The Knights went into the week needing to win two of three from Mary Star to claim to top spot in league. On Monday, the Knights' bats were silenced in their 5-0 loss to the Stars.

On Tuesday, however, the Knights overwhelmed Mary Star on the road with an 8-3 win, setting up the winner-take-all game yesterday. The Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back on their way to the 7-0 win. The Knights got a stellar pitching performance from junior Derek Murphy '22, who threw a complete game shutout for the Knights. Murphy struck out 5, walked 2 and surrendered only 3 hits on the day. The lone threat by Mary Star came in the fourth inning as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Murphy calmly struck out the next two batters and got the final out of the inning on a ground ball to second.

Kyle Sugimoto '22 led the way for the Knights (13-9) at the plate, going 3-3 with 2 doubles, a triple and 4 RBI's.

It was the first league title for BMHS in baseball since 2003.
