2016-17

Torrance, CA (September 25, 2020):
For the first time ever, CalHiSports has ranked the top 30 boys' basketball teams in California state history. Coming in at #22 is the 2016-17 Bishop Montgomery team that captured CIF-SS and State Open Division titles.

The 2016-17 team, coached by Doug Mitchell, finished 31-2 and beat several nationally ranked opponents in the playoffs on their way to winning Southern Section and State crowns.

In the semifinals of the CIF-SS playoffs held at USC's Galen Center, the Knights defeated Sierra Canyon and future NBA player Marvin Bagley. A week later at the Honda Center, the Knights overwhelmed Mater Dei, 70-55, to win the CIF-SS Open title in front of thousands of fans and students.

In the State Open Division playoffs, the Knights beat LiAngelo and LaMelo Ball and Chino Hills in the opening round before defeating Mater Dei once again, this time in the Southern Regional Finals at Long Beach State.

In the state final in Sacramento, the Knights jumped out to a big lead against northern California champion Woodcreek on their way to California's top division title.

Bishop Montgomery senior Ethan Thompson '17 was named California' Mr. Basketball, becoming the first player in program history to earn the state's top individual honor.
