Torrance, CA (January 18, 2019): Friday was a special night on campus as BMHS hosted the Annual Destry Bell '83 Scholarship Event on campus. Many alumni, family, and friends enjoyed dinner together in the BMHS Schneider Retreat Center to celebrate a wonderful man, classmate, teammate, family man and friend. Destry passed away in 2010 and soon after his classmates started a scholarship in his memory to help support current Bishop Montgomery students. Following dinner, many guests made their way down to the gymnasium to watch the BMHS Boys' Basketball team take on Cantwell-Sacred Heart in a Del Rey League game.
Three of the four current recipients were in attendance to meet those that were important to Destry's life, including Destry's father, who flew in from Atlanta to be at the event. "It is always special to have Mr. Bell at the event," says BMHS Director of Development Andy Marafino. "He met the students and their families and welcomed them to the family."
Since the scholarship was established four years ago, over $80,000 has been raised for tuition assistance at BMHS. Each year, some members of the Class of 1983 help choose recipients who are excellent students and wonderful young men and women who have a financial need. "One of the most important things the class looks for in a recipient is a student who truly has a desire to attend BMHS," says Marafino.
A special thank you to Kris Barr-Colin '83, Rob Koran '83, and Joe Rumsey '83 who have been instrumental in making the scholarship and the event so special. We would also like to thank all the alumni who were in attendance. It was also an honor to have Destry's family and friends at the event as well as the recipients and their families.
