Former LMU Coach Gary Ferrin Takes Over BMHS Softball Program

Torrance, CA (February 23, 2016): Bishop Montgomery is excited to announce that former Loyola Marymount University head softball coach Gary Ferrin has been named the next head softball coach for the Lady Knights. Ferrin, no stranger to BMHS, is married to a Bishop alumna Christine Gregorius-Ferrin '83 and saw his daughter, Courtney Ferrin '15, graduate from Bishop last spring. When the head coaching position opened up at Bishop Montgomery, Assistant Principal Steve Miller noted that Ferrin was the obvious choice. According to Miller, the coaching legend was "at the top of the list."

Ferrin retired in 2015 after his 21st season as head coach of the LMU softball program. The most successful coach in the program's history, Ferrin holds a 667-510-1 career record as a head coach, earning conference coach of the year honors three times. He coached seven Players of the Year in 10 years in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference and won three PCSC titles-- the most of any program in the conference's history. In 2014, he led LMU into a new era as softball became a West Coast Conference sponsored sport.

LMU hired Ferrin in 1994 after he had spent over 30 years of coaching and competing in national and international softball competitions. From 1964 to 1984, Ferrin participated in U.S. Military competition with the Air Force, playing baseball for Team Real Madrid in 1974 and 1975. The team won the Spanish National Championship both seasons and represented Spain in the European Baseball Cup.

His position as BMHS head coach will be Ferrin's first in the high school arena, but the Knights are confident he will be an asset to the softball program, and his coaching expertise and skill will immediately be felt at the school and among the players. The Lady Knights, under Coach Ferrin, begin their season with a home opener against South Torrance on March 8.
