Torrance, CA (June 3, 2015): On Saturday, May 29, Archbishop José H. Gomez ordained eight new priests for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The ordination, held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles, included two Bishop Montgomery alumni, Raymont Medina '03 and Jonathon Meyer '04. Both men completed their theological formation at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo.
On Monday, June 1, Principal Rosemary Libbon and the BMHS faculty celebrated the ordinations with a joyful breakfast and acknowledgment of these two special alumni. During the breakfast, Ms. Libbon presented Fr. Raymont and Fr. Jonathon each with a clergy stole and thanked the new priests for their service to the Church. She also thanked them for making Bishop Montgomery proud and representing the values and mission of the school in such a remarkable way. "Jonathon and Raymont are the truest examples of Bishop Montgomery's motto to 'Seek Justice, Speak Truth, and Serve with Honor,'" says Libbon. "We could not be more proud of these young men and their decision to dedicate themselves to Christ and His Church."
While at Bishop Montgomery, both men imagined their futures taking different paths-- ones that did not involve a vocation in the priesthood. Although Fr. Jonathon first felt the calling to the priesthood in middle school, he pursued science in college with the intention of going to medical school. Instead of entering medical school, however, he entered the seminary. As a senior at Bishop Montgomery, Fr. Raymont cultivated a love for biology; however, his college path took a different turn when he, too, discerned God's call and decided to enter the seminary.
After seven years of study, both were thrilled to be ordained and begin their service in Los Angeles Archdiocesan parishes. Fr. Raymont will be an associate at Sacred Heart parish in Lancaster. Fr. Jonathon, who says finally "being ordained after preparing for it so much and looking forward to it for so long is sometimes hard to believe," will serve at St. John the Baptist parish in Baldwin Park. Prior to reporting for their parish assignments in July, the former BMHS schoolmates and fellow seminarians will enjoy a much-needed and much-deserved vacation in New York City.
