Torrance, CA (March 22, 2013): Bishop Montgomery boys' basketball coach Doug Mitchell has been named the California Coaches Association Southern Section Boys' Basketball Coach of the Year for 2012-13. Mitchell led the Knights to a 32-2 record and the Del Rey League title. The Knights also finished 8th in the state in the CalHiSports.com rankings, 5th in southern California and 33rd in the nation by MaxPreps.
The 2012-13 team won all three tournaments they entered: Westchester Trevor Ariza Classic, Mission Prep Christmas Classic, and Redondo Tournament and they defeated schools from 5 different states. The Knights completed the regular season with a perfect 26-0 record, including wins over Westchester, St. John Bosco, and Serra (three times).

This season marked Mitchell's 24th year as the head coach at BMHS. He has a career record of 531-158 at BMHS and has led the Knights to 14 league titles, 4 CIF-SS titles, and 2 state titles. Additionally, Mitchell has guided the Knights to the playoffs every year he has been at the helm.
