Alumni Return to Speak to Christian Vocations Classes

Torrance, CA (December 7, 2012): On Thursday, December 6, three Bishop Montgomery alumni returned to campus to speak to Mr. John Fitzsimons' Christian Vocations classes.

Seminarians Raymont Medina '03 and Jonathon Meyer '04 are both currently in formation to become priests. Medina, who is at St. Mariana de Paredes in Pico Rivera, and Meyer, who is at St. Michael's in Los Angeles, were installed into the Ministry of Acolyte in March. Following their service in this order, they will return to the seminary.

The two alumni spoke to Fitzsimons' senior Christian Vocations classes about vocations in general, and how to discern God's calling in your life, using their journey to the priesthood as an example. "Medina and Meyer spoke about how Bishop Montgomery and various teachers played significant roles, as did their parents," explained Fitzsimons.

When they graduated from BMHS, neither had any thought of entering the priesthood; Meyer attended Catholic University and Medina was at UCLA, and both had dreams of becoming doctors. When family crises led each of them to reconsider their futures, both Medina and Meyer said that letting go of the illusion of control helped them take a look at the priesthood.

The seminarians also spoke to the students about how Marriage, Single, and Consecrated were all important vocations; that each of the students has unique gifts and talents; and they encouraged the students to take the time to listen to God and those around them in discerning their path in life.

In addition to Medina and Meyer, Fr. Richard Sunwoo '96, who is at St. Lawrence Martyr, stopped by and arranged for lunch for current BMHS students who are also SLM alumni. "It was really special for me to have all three of them there," explained Fitzsimons, "as they all know each other and I taught all three."
