Torrance, CA (December 4, 2012): On Monday, December 3, longtime Bishop Montgomery basketball coach Doug Mitchell notched his 500th victory at the school, solidifying him as one of the most successful basketball coaches in California state history. The Knights beat Manuel Arts 92-25 in their season opener of the Westchester Trevor Ariza Classic. The Knights were led by sophomore Stephen Thompson, Jr. '15 (22 points) and Pepperdine-bound senior Lamond Murray, Jr. '13 (18 points).

Mitchell arrived at BMHS in 1989-90 and has had unprecedented success at the school. In 23 years at the helm of the boys' basketball program, Mitchell has a career record of 499-156 for a .762 winning percentage. His teams have made the playoffs every year and he has sent countless players to play in college. Prior to coming to Bishop Montgomery, Mitchell spent two years as the head coach at South Torrance, his Alma Mater.
