BMHS Honors Heroic Alumni Police Officers

Torrance, CA (September 5, 2012): On September 5, 2012, at the first school Mass of the new year, BMHS honored two alumni police officers for their heroism in the line of duty.

On January 18, 2011, Gardena Police Lieutenant Vince Osorio '87 and Gardena Police Detective Hugo Gualotuna '90 were among the officers who entered Gardena High School and rescued two students who had been shot. With the gunman still on the loose inside the campus, officers, including Osorio and Gualotuna, found a teenage girl on the floor of a classroom with a gunshot wound to her head. The officers picked her up and carried her to safety.

In May 2012, Osorio and Gualotuna were honored by the South Bay Medal of Valor committee for their roles in serving the community.

In addition, the Mass was celebrated by LAPD Chaplain, and BMHS alumnus, Rev. Mike McCullough '64.

Bishop Montgomery was also honored to welsome back several other alumni and parent officers from different cities and communities. Thank you to El Segundo Police Chief Mitch Tavera '76, Torrance Police Officer Rey Lara '00, Fullerton Police Officer Carlos Aceves '05, and retired Palos Verdes Police Officer Rob Blee
