Torrance, CA (May 18, 2012): On March 30-31, four students in Bishop Montgomery's latin classes traveled to Atherton for the 57th Annual California Juniot Classical League State Convention held at Menlo School. Under the guidance and direction of BMHS Latin teacher and alumna Megan Ashby-Moreau '01, the students participated in both academic, athletic, and social activities over the course of the weekend. The convention included all schools in California that have a Latin program. Over 1,000 students took part in the event.
Some of the highlights of the convention included chariot races and a catapult contest and the World Series of Certamen (a game of fast recall of facts about classical civilizations and its peoples, languages, and cultures). The academic tests taken by the students included sections on ancient geography, classical art, grammar, mythology, and reading comprehension.
"This trip was a great opportunity for my Latin kids, not only to exercise their knowledge of the subject in a fun way, but it also gave them the chance to spend time together outside of school and have the experience of traveling together," explained Moreau. "Travel bonds people in a special way and hopefully these will be memories that they carry with them throughout their lives. We're looking forward to going again next year. Perhaps with a bigger group...we might even win the catapult contest!"
