Chris Huben '12 Named 2011 Junior Lifeguard of the Year

At its fall meeting, the California Surf Lifesaving Association selected Cadet Chris Huben as the California Junior Lifeguard of the Year. Chris demonstrated an outstanding work ethic and tremendous skill as a surf lifesaver. Chris was a Cadet at El Segundo in the mornings, but also chose to stay for the afternoon. Chris was there, five days a week, for two sessions a day, working the same long shifts as the Junior Lifeguard Instructors. Chris also chose to work on the weekends in the lifeguard towers. He volunteered his time, on busy days, to assist the lifeguards in keeping the public safe. This summer, our 47 JG Cadets made 180 rescues, 59 of those were Chris’s. Time and again, Cadet Huben used the skills he learned as a Junior Lifeguard to bring struggling swimmers safely to the shore. He worked at Dockweiler on the July 4 weekend, and the lifeguard he was partnered with had this to say about him: “He read the ocean great and could sense when things were going to go wrong before they did. He hit the water every time he needed to and didn't hesitate when he was unsure. His can was high all day and his energy never let up. It was a very busy day, to say the least, and I couldn't have done it without him. He performed just as well as most guards I've worked with and what he lacked in experience he made up for with energy and proactive guarding.” Great job Chris! We are all very proud of you.
