Athletics: CIF COVID-19 Update

Dear BMHS Community,

We want to keep you informed regarding our COVID-19 athletic schedules as we receive news. With this being said, we have an update from the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) office as of late yesterday afternoon.

The CIF State Office in Sacramento announced that all fall practice and competition start dates are on hold until the state department health officers present official COVID-19 guidance. “The CIF does not expect [the State Department of Public Health] will issue any guidance allowing for schools to return to full practice and competition until after January 1, 2021, at the earliest,” a spokesperson for CIF stated. “Thus, all full practice and competition start dates are officially on hold until that updated guidance is issued.”

We are hopeful that CIF will provide more guidance after the first of the year with regards to moving forward.

For Fall sports, the CIF decided to cancel all regional and state championship dates. This decision was made to allow more scheduling flexibility and to provide the best opportunity for all Fall sports to have a season in a timely manner.

The CIF also made the decision to move boys’ volleyball back to its traditional Spring season. In the original COVID-19 restructure, the CIF moved boys' volleyball to the Fall. The decision to move boys' volleyball back to the Spring was made at the CIF State level. The CIF Southern Section, of which Bishop Montgomery is a member, will poll its schools regarding their desire to make this move as well.

Bishop Montgomery will continue with its current conditioning programs. We continue to follow all county, state and archdiocesan health and safety mandates as our guide. The safety of our students and families is, as always, our top priority.

Thank you and stay safe.
