Thanksgiving Message from Principal Jim Garza

Dear Bishop Families,

During the month of November we have an opportunity to give thanks for our blessings, a time when we remember that the opposite of scarcity is not abundance, but gratitude. President John F. Kennedy’s words ring as true today as they did in his Proclamation of 1963: “Over three centuries ago, our forefathers in Virginia and in Massachusetts, far from home in a lonely wilderness, set aside a time of thanksgiving. On the appointed day, they gave reverent thanks for their safety, for the health of their children, for the fertility of their fields, for the love which bound them together, and for the faith which united them with their God.” This national holiday has become associated with a time of feasting and family gatherings, but in this year of pandemic, the feasting of many is threatened by food insecurity, and the gathering of families is in question, as we try to keep those we love healthy and safe. For some members of our Bishop community this season has been marked by the death of a loved one. We offer our condolences and prayers for those that have experienced the loss of a loved one during the year.

And, if we are unable to gather with our loved ones and families, we hold the space in our hearts wide and open for them and all people. There is need in our world for our faith and love to help sustain us.

Last week, the governor announced that, due to the increase of COVID-19 cases in the state, many counties will move to the “purple” tier including those of our tri-county archdiocese. At the time of this correspondence, no changes have been made to local health orders for schools. We anticipate further information in the coming days after the holiday; we will keep you posted.

In closing, we are at a turning point in this pandemic. There might be hope on the horizon with the promise of a vaccine, yet we are faced with another surge of cases at this time. It’s important that we remain vigilant and steadfast in our faith, in each other and in all of the preparation we have done to meet this moment. We will continue, as always, to keep you informed and support you as we advance our Catholic school ministry together. I hope to share with you another update after the Thanksgiving holiday. Thank you for your commitment and dedication to our community.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Jim Garza, Ed. D.
