Class of 2020 Drive-Thru Graduation Ceremony

When the calendar for the 2019-20 school year was published, there is no doubt that every student in the Class of 2020 turned to May to check the date of the graduation ceremony. May 29 was etched in their minds as the day they would cross the stage and receive their diploma, officially becoming members of the alumni community.

In March, the world changed and left the seniors, and everyone else, wondering when, or if, things would go back to normal. Since the day Bishop Montgomery moved to online learning, it was always foremost in the minds of the administration to keep May 29 as graduation day, as long as it was safe to do so under safer-at-home guidelines. Despite the constant changes leading up to the day, the school was able to provide a graduation event, of sorts, for the seniors on the day they had been looking forward to since August.

From 10:00am to approximately 3:00pm on May 29, the seniors arrived on campus to pick up their diploma and walk across the stage just like every graduate since 1961. Many families arrived in cars decorated in black and gold signs, balloons, streamers and other decorations to help celebrate a wonderful accomplishment. Seniors and families drove from the front of campus back to Knight Stadium, stopped on the track at the 50-yard line, handed their name card to the counselors, and walked to the stage for their diploma and photo while their name was read. As the cars coming and going passed each other winding through campus, a chorus of horns, cheers, and clapping could be heard from all corners.

One June 5, Bishop Montgomery will make the entire graduation video available to view. It will include previously recorded valedictory and salutatory addresses as well as speeches from our Principal, Dr. Jim Garza, and our honored guest and friend, Fr. Jim Anguiano. Please check back on our website to view the graduation ceremony.

Congratulations Class of 2020!
