Robotics & Science Teams Fare Well in Competitions

Robo-Knights Science Olympiad

Torrance, CA (February 26, 2020): The weekend of February 22-23 was a busy and successful time for students competing in local Robotics and Science competitions.

On Saturday, the Science Team entered the Regional Science Olympiad at Rio Hondo College. Throughout the day, the team competed in 23 builds, events and exams. From building protein models, to musical instruments, to digital thermometers, the team spent hours planning and carrying out their builds in preparation. In the exam portion of the competition, the team answered questions from every niche of science including recognizing bird calls in ornithology, identifying stars from their light spectra in astronomy, and devising experiments to test human physiology using only pipe cleaners and protractors in experimental design.

Of the 53 schools participating, Bishop Montgomery finished in 19th place, defeating such schools as Santa Monica (20th), Chadwick (21st), Loyola (28th), San Pedro (38th) and Damien (41st). "I am extremely proud of their hard work, resilience, grit and positive attitude," says Science Team moderator Lisa Walle '00. "The team was an incredible combination of dedicated and fun students that made the weeks of research, the grueling exams, and even the hour van ride each way, an awesome experience."

On Sunday, Bishop Montgomery's Robotics team - the Robo-Knights - reached the finals in the Los Angeles/SoCal First Tech Challenge Inter-League Tournament at Monrovia High School. In all, 23 schools competed, and despite losing in the finals, the Robo-Knights qualified for the Los Angeles Regionals on March 7, which will consist of 48 schools. Under the direction of moderator John Sanalone, the Robo-Knights have been hard at work all year building and perfecting their robot. "The students do such a great job of working collaboratively on every aspect of the process," says Sansalone. "They are wonderful to work with and it is great to see them be successful."
