US After 1945 (Period 4)

Course Description

US After 1945, popularly called "The History of Rock and Roll" is a one semester elective course in the Social Studies Department. The course is primarily lecture based with some small reading and writing assignments. Quizzes and exams are based on both reading and lecture. The course reviews major events of US History from the late 1940s through the 1980s and then looks at how those events and society at the time are reflected in the popular music of the day. The course is structured to cover a period of history (such as a decade) and then the music of that same time period, alternating history, then music, history, then music. Over the course of the semester, students will listen to approximately 1200 songs (or clips) stretching from the late 1940s through the 1980s, covering many different genres of popular music.
