Description
How to Learn Math
Step 1: I will create an activity where I teach you the specific steps of how to solve a certain type of problem (like factoring Trinomials for example).
--  You have to repeat the activity several times while focused (which is why you practice the problems immediately after I teach you how to do the steps).

Step 2:  This activity needs to be repeated several times - if you do 4 to 10 problems in a row and you are doing them correctly, you will learn that material - but you have to try!
--  The most important part of this “learning process” is that you practice what you just learned several times in a row as you are learning it in order to encode the process in your long-term memory."  If you don't do this, you'll go home and start your homework and then realize that you forgot everything you "thought you knew."

Step 3
The activity needs immediate feedback,
--  That means that you have to check your work as you are learning the process to make sure you are doing things correctly.
--  Ask questions! Follow the process and always ask questions so you learn the material faster.
--  Check your answers as you are learning the problems or come to me and go through the steps so I can guide you through the process correctly.

Step 4:
You need to consciously correct your mistakes -- correcting your mistakes as you make them actually speeds up the learning process.
--  Work though the problem, and when you catch yourself making a mistake, correct it immediately and you'll actually learn that part of the problem better than if you never made a mistake in the first place.

Step 5:
This is mentally demanding work which means you should take short breaks when your focus fades. You really need to focus when you're doing homework.  You'll get through it faster and it becomes a good habit.

Finally, realize that the difference between an "A" student and an "F student is the number of focused repetitions they complete using the correct steps. You do this by practicing the steps as soon as you learn them and then by doing extra work (homework) on your own time. If you don't do the homework, you can't possibly learn the material, so make sure you give yourself a time slot every day so you can do the extra work. This applies to anything you learn in life; as you are taught any skill, you have to practice it correctly several times in order to encode it into long-term memory.

You'll learn a lot in this class -- and its actually kind of fun according to former students.

You are doing the problems in your workbook:  8 - 1, 8 - 2, 8 - 3.  This is worth 30-points so please do the work the way it should be done.
Write down the problem, show all work, and then highlight your answers.

I don't want you getting frustrated with me because you are lazy.  If you don't understand something, don't be embarrassed....  come and let me help you.  This is what they pay me for so learn it now.

I'm always at school very early so come in then if you don't feel comfortable asking questions in front of the class..  I don't care how you learn the math, I just want you to learn it now so down the road math will be a lot easier for you.  No one else is going to give you pre-exams and then re-exams as we study for the final exam.

Have a good long weekend, because we will work hard up through the final exam.

Due:

Assignment

This is your opportunity to completely change your grade if you are having problems learning the material.  The second time around is always easier to learn something.

All you have to have is the motivation to learn just one problem from each section from chapters 8 - 12 and each question is worth 10-points.  That is a lot of points to bring your grade up and LEARN!

Our goal is everyone leaves Algebra one this semester with an A or B grade!

This is NOT an extra credit assignment...

Due:

Assignment

7-1: 1 - 3 & 29 - 31 (just graph it and forget about the graphing calculator
7-2: 16 - 21
7-3: 4-6
7-5: 1-3 and 19-21
7-6: 1 - 3

Due:

Assignment

Check your grades from your notes that you took as I went over the exam answers with you -- those of you that didn't take notes earned a low grade which shows you that your grade is what it is because you are not studying.

Page 708: 1 - 12 & 19 - 30 all.

We have done this material before so look in the text book to show you how to do the work -- if you hand in incomplete work from this point forward, you will recieve a zero.

This is all review from now on so your grade can really go up.  This will also show you and your parents your level of effort.

Due:

Assignment

PAGE 55: 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, & 9.
Rather than write down the words in the problem, translate the word problem into a math problem and do each question with a, b, c, & d.

Be neat and learn how to use your calculator

Due:

Assignment

Here is your Pre-exam for the chapter 8 exam which will be mulitple choice this time.

However, I grade the work and if you have the right answer on the scantron, but the work does not match, you do not get credit.

The work is more important than the answer UNTIL you learn how to do the work. The only way to learn math is to actually do math.

You can't learn a sport watching a game on TV and you'll never learn math watching me do problems on the board -- you actually have to do the problems with me on the board.

10 - 12: Copy down the graphs, find the quation of the line using slope-intercept form, then transpose into Standard Form and find your answer.

13 - 26: Graph all problems and identify x & y intercepts.

27 - 35: Write down the problem, then put into Standard Form.... that's it (you don't have to graph this section.

This is an all or nothing assignment. You cannot skip any problems because I've gone over them many, many times and you can look to the left of the problems and it tells you where the example is; gives you the page number and the example number.

Let's see how responsible you are for your work.  You need to practice during this short vacation because when you come back, we've got less than two work weeks to get you ready for chapter 6, and then get you prepared for the comprehensive final exam...

Due:

Assignment

STUDY!
Print out the pre-exam (15 questions) and do it.
If you are not sure how to do one type of problem, do 5 of them in a row. Use your notes to help you.
Then study right before you go to sleep.

Before the test -- make sure you have a quiz strip for the exam (smaller than a scantron)
If you are nervous, write down how you feel and what you feel and the feelings will go away.

DON'T SKIP STEPS! Remember, that is the #1 reason why kids make mistakes...

Good luck...

Due:

Assignment

Print out this short Chapter 2 quiz and show every single step the way I taught you and you will earn 50-points.  It's all or nothing so put some effort into the work and you will be fine.

The kids that show all their work are doing great!  The kids that skip steps are not doing well.  Trust me and do this -- the goal is that all students earn an A or a B in the class for the semester.

Due:

Assignment

Page 703 in the book. Do all the problems except 22 & 50. Show all your work.

Print out the attached pre-exam and bring it to class. This is what your exam looks like; if you can do this, you will do well on the exam.

Due:

Assignment

No Homework, but you should know how to do almost all the problems on your pre-exam so bring the pre-exam with you to class

Due:

Assignment

Big Book Page 107: 6 - 11. I want you to set up each of those problems as we do in class and solve them (don't worry about the book directions, I just want you to show me that you can set up and solve those consecutive number problems.
Work Book Page 14: 1, 9, 11, 12.  Do these just as  I taught them to you.  Focus on the process and don't worry about the answer.

Then, I want you to set up the word problems that are attached to this assignment just the way we learned in class. If you want to finish the problem, go ahead; but I just need you to set them up.

Be very neat so I can see your work so I can help you if you get stuck. Don't give up -- you must spend the time focused and the steps will come to you.

Due:

Assignment

Workbook Page 12: 1 - 45 All. You do NOT have to check answers -- but be sure you show all the steps.

Due:

Assignment

Page 11: 1 - 32 All Skip 7 - 11 for now.

Workbook page 10: 1 - 50 Odd. Skip 22 - 26. Also do the work that I've attached to this assignment on consecutive numbers.

Write out the problem, show all work, box / highlight your answers.

Good job so far kids! I know there is a lot to learn, but you are learning it.

Below I have the Key to a practice exam showing you how to do the work. Print it out, re-write all the problems and do those on your own as we go though the chapter.

Due:

Assignment

I've attached your chapter 2 Pre-exam with an answer key. The Pre-exam is multiple-choice, but I don't know if your exam will be multiple-choice or not.

You are expected to print out the exam (not the answer key) and have it will you at all times in our math class so we can refer to it.

Due:

Assignment

No Homework -- we will go over the exam tomorrow, know our grades and make conscious corrections on the problem we had difficulty with. We will learn from our mistakes.

Due:

Assignment

Chapter 1 Exam -- 100 points.

Due:

Assignment

Chapter 1 Pre-exam is due completed with all work shown.

Due:

Assignment

Page 702: Complete 1 - 65 Odd.

Bring in your Pre-exam today -- most of it should be done so you can ask questions about anything you are unsure of...

Due:

Assignment

Page's 6 & 7 in your workbook. Problems 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19 & so on for both pages.
Show every step to receive credit...

Due:

Assignment

Big Book Page 28: (42 - 55), (1 - 35) & then do (38 - 41) Do the odds I have attached a 'cheat sheet' to show you the steps of doing the harder problems and I did two of the more difficult problems for you. Bring the cheat sheet tomorrow and I'll give you 5 extra credit points. Print it out and turn it in at the biggining of class with your name and period / date on it to receiver credit.

I have attached a copy of the book's pages to this assignment....

Write out the problems, show all the steps and draw the 3 word problems as we did in class today..

Due:

Assignment

Page 21 in your big books: 24 - 36 & 51 - 62 all. A copy of that page is attached below.

Each and every day you need to bring the following to class:
1) Big Books,
2) Work Books,
3) Pencil
4) Paper,
5) Calculator for conversions.

You will lose points if you are not prepared for class. Its early in the semester so we need to get into using good habits right now...

Due:

Assignment

Page 2 in your workbook. If you don't have your work book yet, scroll down and I have it for you there...

Remember... its multiply or divide first so in a problem like 40 divided by 5 times 2 the answer is 16 and NOT 4.

To test this, plug it in your calculator and the answer will come out right....

Due:

Assignment

Page 2 of your workbook: If you don't have your workbook I've attached the pages below.

For problem #4, either assume 40 divided by (5)(2) or 40 divided by 5●2 and you will get different answers. In the first option; 40 will be divided after you multiple 5 & 2 because both 5 and 2 where in parenthesis, and in the second one you will divide 40 by 5 and then multiply by two because it is multiply or divide from left to right...

Be sure to re-write all the problems on a separate sheet of paper and then show all the steps of your work which should be about 4-steps for each problem. Then box / highlight your answers.

Make sure you print neatly so I can read your work. It helps you learn it faster and it allows me to see where / if you make any mistakes and I can help you with them now.
Learn this as you go and DON'T wait until just before the exam to study. I will send progress reports home to your parents this week so if you are not working in out class, mom and dad will know this week. Learn good study habits right now -- you will learn how to do all of this and it will end up being fun for you...

Remember; learning Algebra is a lot like watching a good movie: You watch it the first time you don’t get a lot of it because you’re brain can only take in so much so when you watch it a second time you seem more scenes that you had no idea where there. Even if you have no idea what I’m talking about the first time I teach something to you, by the time you have watched me do it 8 times, you will understand completely what I’m talking about.

Anyone can learn algebra because it is logic and common sense by following certain rules. You can NOT be a math person and still earn an “A” in Algebra.

Due:

Assignment

Page one in your workbook -- we will probably do the entire page so ask questions if you have them.  We may do page 2 as well depending on how it looks like you are doing....

Get ready for word problems -- you'll be surprised that you will be able to do them....

Due:

Assignment

Attached to this homework assignment (this isn't homework) are two sample syllabus / contract examples from freshmen that earned full credit for their work. If you didn't earn full credit on your contract / syllabus, compare your work with these and you will be able to see why points were deducted from your work.

If any points were deducted, the usual issues were;
1) You did not staple the contract first, then the re-write,
2) You turned in a copy of the syllabus I wrote,
3) You put little effort into your work (didn't write enough).

I'm picky about your work now so you realize that you need to do good, solid work in order to learn the material.

Due:

Assignment

Students will re-write the syllabus using my format and their own words. This is the first work of yours that I will see and it will tell me a lot about your work habits. This is a "first impression" exercise that will help you understand the rules of conduct in the class and give me an opportunity to see the standard of your work.

You can find the class syllubus one the class pages; just click your class and scroll down to the bottom of the page and open the PDF file and please read the directions. Fifty-points possible, and 50% in points for each day late. However, if you turn this syllabus re-write in on the first day of school, you will earn 10-points of extra credit allong with whatever grade you earn on the project.

Do a great job, learn how the class works, make a great first impression and start out the semester with an "A" in class.

Due:

Assignment

Print out and bring the Chapter 1 Pre-exam to class so we can go over it. It does NOT have to be completed, but it does have to be stapled and have your name on it to receive points.

You will find the PDF version of the test below and PDF is a FREE download so you can open the file and print out the pre-test.
