BMHS Key Club "Takes Over" Kiwanis Club Meeting

Torrance, CA (January 20, 2016): The Kiwanis Club of Torrance enjoyed new leadership at their recent lunch meeting. After opening the January 12 assembly, President Steve Makshanoff turned it over to Bishop Montgomery Key Club President Celina Villanueva. Celina led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and the invocation, then introduced her fellow officers in attendance: James Serrano, Vice President; Natsuki Hishinuma, Secretary; An Nguyen, Secretary; Kristen Powell, Treasurer; Evan Lam, Publicity; and David Aguilar, Sergeant at Arms.

Celina spoke to the Kiwanis about the Key Club's recent service efforts and upcoming events on the club's calendar.  During a busy fall 2015 semester, Key Club members volunteered at the Hermosa Beach triathlon in October and helped with Rose Float decorating in December.  They also sold water at Bishop's first dance of the year - the Big Kahuna Hula in September -- and helped with various beach clean-ups. Forty three students also attended the Key Club Fall Rally at Magic Mountain in November. During the Fall Rally, the Key Clubbers participated in motivational programs, attended a spirit rally and, through their participation and efforts, helped fund the Kiwani's Pediatric Trauma Program.

Upcoming activities include more fundraisers and a blood drive on February 24 for Bishop students and parents. Key Club members are also looking forward to the annual District Convention in April.  The Convention, a highlight on the Key Club calendar, will be held in the Sacramento Convention Center and bring together thousands of student leaders from Key Club's CNH (California, Nevada and Hawaii) district.

The Kiwanis were impressed with the Bishop Key Club officers in attendance and thanked them for their presence at the meeting and their on-going service to their school and community.  Kiwanis Club member and Bishop alumna Gayle Martin-CdeBaca '91 shared with BMHS that she was thrilled to "have lunch with some really great kids from the Bishop Key Club," and noted that "they did a great job and were so nice" to everyone at the lunch meeting.
