Torrance, CA (April 25, 2022):
Bishop Montgomery is excited to announce that alumna Rheina Ale ‘08 has been named the 19th Girls’ Basketball Head Coach in program history. She takes over for Noelle Quinn ‘03 and Raymond Garnett. Quinn served as head coach from 2016-2022, but her expanded duties as head coach of the Seattle Storm (WNBA) and as lead assistant coach for the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team prompted her to step away as head coach. This past season, Garnett stepped in to help guide BMHS to the CIF-SS Open Division and State Division I playoffs. BMHS finished the season with a 19-7 record.

While at Bishop Montgomery, Ale was a 4-year varsity standout for the Lady Knights. She was the 2007-08 Del Rey League MVP, a 3-time all-league and 2-time All-CIF selection. She is 9th in school history in scoring with 1,477 points. After her senior year, she was named 2008 Female Athlete-of-the-Year.

After graduation, Ale attended the University of San Francisco where she was a 4-year starter and an All-WCC performer. Her name is in the USF record books in several career categories: 3rd in free throw percentage (.817), 5th in free throws made (379) and 3rd in minutes played (3,755). She also ranks 6th in single season 3-pointers made (60).

“We are thrilled to have Rheina back at Bishop Montgomery,” says BMHS Athletic Director Doug Mitchell. “She has a wonderful energy about her and she has always had a passion for the game. She was a special player at Bishop and in college and she will be a special coach for our girls in the basketball program.”

Last season, Ale served as the head coach at St. Bernard High School and led the team to an 8-11 record (6-2 in league) and a berth in the CIF-SS playoffs.

“I am so excited for this opportunity and I am excited to meet the girls,” says Ale. “Being back at Bishop Montgomery and having my friends and family close is important to me. This has been a goal of mine and I am ready for the challenge of following in Noelle’s footsteps. She is a mentor of mine and I am excited to get started.”
