AP Chemistry (Period Period 3)
Course Description
The Advanced Placement Chemistry course is meant to parallel the chemistry course taken by
science majors during the first two semesters of college. Therefore, AP Chemistry is designed to be a
second-year chemistry course in high school. While there is some overlap in topics between the first year and second-year chemistry courses, there will also be substantial differences. More
mathematical sophistication is expected in this second-year course, and the exercises completed in
the laboratory are more demanding, both conceptually and mathematically. The increasing demand
upon computational skills dictates then that students should have had at least Algebra 2 and
concurrently be enrolled, or have taken, an introductory calculus course. A familiarity with physics
will be highly advantageous. The demands placed upon the students both inside and outside of the
class will be demanding, but the rewards, I hope, will be great.
