“Looking at the past must only be a means of understanding more clearly what and who they are so that they can more wisely build the future.”

― Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed

In my English and Speech classes, I work to integrate all aspects of students’ personal life and have them connect those experiences with the material that we are covering in the course. I feel that when students engage with the content on a personal level they are more apt to remember the material and want to think about the material on a deeper level.

I try and adapt my classroom and teachings to help students actively take part in creating the curriculum similar to John Dewey’s ideas and this allows the students to feel much more invested in their education.
  • Students need a reason to care about their education.
  • Students need to feel invested in what they are learning.
  • Students need to be given responsibility to help prepare them for the future.
