My philosophy of education is to foster curiosity, creativity, and technology exploration while attempting to reach the widest audience of students. While teaching technology, removing a student’s fear and developing an individual that has the wherewithal to explore and attempt to overcome obstacles is an overall component to my philosophy of education. All students need varying levels of personalized support. As a teacher it is our job to curtail instruction to the need of developing content understanding in our students.“Good teaching” is reaching students with your content. All people are different. Some techniques may work for a large percentage of the class, but as a “good teacher” you must ensure that the teaching adapts to the learner. As a “good teacher” you must adjust your teaching style to meet individual needs. Incorporating contemporary teaching strategies and concepts like Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

 

Alternatively, you are constricting your educational practices to outdated techniques centered and steeped in concepts like rote memorization. Or worse, preparing students for their adult life with outdated skills pertaining to jobs and occupations that are no longer relevant or in existence. Contrary to traditional educational practices, I believe we need to make our students lifelong learners, develop passion for overcoming problems, and foster their creativity.

 

In, The Element, Ken Robinson said, “… the key to this transformation [of education] is not to standardize education, but to personalize it, to build achievement on discovering the individual talents of each child …”. This statement resonates with my own philosophy of education. My job is to expose students to new knowledge, and have students retain that knowledge. Each student has individual talents, and as their teacher, I need to understand these talents and teach to them in a fashion that caters to their abilities.
