Art 3/4 (Period 3)

Course Description

Art 3-4 is an advanced studio course in which students will increase technical skills, develop a more sophisticated approach to process and subject matter, and create a portfolio of individual work. Students will be expected to create more complex works utilizing concepts and techniques developed in Art 1-2. The Elements and Principles of Art will continue to be stressed and explored. Students are to be committed to working both inside and outside of the classroom, as well as completing required museum visits.

Refinement of observational drawing skills is stressed and new media and techniques are introduced. Students will work with a variety of art materials such as; charcoal, acrylic paint, pencil, colored pencil, oil pastel, ink, photography, and printmaking. Students will analyze visual artworks through group and individual written and oral critiques. Students keep a sketchbook to explore artistic process, experiment with materials and analyze work. Through experimentation and refinement, each student will create a body of work that includes observational drawing, mixed media and a variety of self-chosen media. The studio environment of the class is used to support analysis, reflection, and refinement of work. Students are expected to meet deadlines, work consistently in class, as well as devote time outside of class to develop ideas, create sketches and prepare materials.
