Video and Music Production Students Attend LA Conference

(Torrance – September 19, 2016) – On Saturday, seven Bishop Montgomery students attended the 2nd Annual State of Music in Media conference at Hollywood’s Emerson College. Hosted by the Guild of Music Supervisors, the event featured presentations and panel conversations with top-industry music supervisors and other media music experts. The conference’s main objective was to explore the use of music across all media genres including television, advertising, games, trailers, and film.

The students, in attendance with Bishop Music Director Eric Hankey, were guests of BMHS alumna and guild member Yvette Metoyer ’94.  Metoyer, whose career as a music supervisor and music coordinator on a variety of television series has made her a well-known name in the industry, arranged for the students to attend presentations throughout the day, some with topics directly related to the students’ Video Production and Music Production classes. “It was fantastic. Everyone at Bishop, and then also at the conference, wants to expose us to as much about the industry behind the camera as they can,” explains JaNarie Rhambo, a senior in Hankey’s Video Production class. “I told Mr. Hankey that I wanted to go to the conference because I want to be versatile in my future career in the entertainment industry. I want to know more than one thing-- I don’t want to be limited to one area. If I’m a screenwriter or a director, I also want to know about the music side. I want to know about everything I can so I have options.”

As part of their day, the students attended two presentations-- the first an hour-long panel with the musicians who scored the Star Wars video game series. The second presentation was conducted by Metoyer herself who shared her insights and knowledge of the industry from the perspective of a music supervisor. Rhambo was particularly impressed with Metoyer’s explanation of obtaining and using music for a wide variety of media projects. “Yvette’s presentation was really insightful and helpful because, as filmmakers, we learned the importance of following all of the steps for creating the music part of a film. She was also very specific in helping us—she even gave us leads on licensing companies. We have a list people we can email and network with about music for our films.”
