About the course:
Honors Biology is a challenging but exciting course full of reading, notes and activities. Being a lover of biology it is my goal to not only instruct in the coursework but inspire a love of the subject. This is an honors course which means it will certainly not be an easy class. Each students in expected to read nightly, study daily and be in class as much as is possible.
The goal is to prepare students in Honors Biology for the SAT II in biology and perhaps AP biology. For this reason large amounts of time will be spent on the more complicated mechanisms and topics and much less time will be allotted to simple memorizing topics. Students will be expected to work independently, show the ability to time manage, and use technology to their advantage.
Speaking of Technology…
- In most cases a student set of notes will be posted on-line prior to the lecture on that topic. There will be missing information that will be filled in during the lecture but these notes are only the skeleton of chapter. Students should be adding material to them based on their reading and listening during lecture.
- GRADES WILL BE POSTED ONLINE . They can be located using the following process
- Grades: bmhs-la.org <click> faculty pages (on the right hand side of web-site) <click> LisaWalle website <click> class pages <click> period your student is in my class
Scroll to their ID number. They are listed in class rank order.
Keys to success:
- Read/ look over each chapter in advance before lecture.
- Attend lecture and take good, organized notes.
- Ask questions… lots and lots of questions
- Mark the topics that were covered extensively or multiple times… more time means it’s more likely to be a question on the exam.
- See me for any questions that you come across… I love to talk about science!
- Make sure all assignments are turned in on time to avoid silly points off.
Discipline
RULES…
- Be in the classroom and ready to begin by the beginning of the bell… if the bell is ringing as you walk in you are LATE!
- Raise your hand and wait for acknowledgement before speaking.
- Follow the dress codes… fixable infractions will be followed with violations while unfixable infractions (belts etc) will require a trip to the dean’s office.
- Breaks are for getting your books, going to the bathroom and having a snack… thus none of those things will be permitted in my classroom.
- Any rules can be changed or added to at any time.
If you violate the rules you will be given a violation (make sense?!?). Further action will be taken if the problem persists.
My goal is for you to enjoy this class and learn how fun, interesting, and applicable biology can be. If you need anything ask, I can meet you in class, before school (I get here at 7:15) or after school by appointment!
