GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The French I language course at BMHS is a two semester course.

The study of French as a second language enables learners to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to understand and communicate in French, and thus experience the pleasure and satisfaction of communicating authentically in a language other than their own.

In conjunction with the many changes in educational trends, the French as a second language curriculum endorses a communicative, experimental curriculum as well as focuses on accuracy in the written language.

GOALS:

  1. Study basic French grammar
  2. Develop vocabulary acquisition in context and listening comprehension skills
  3. Promote written communication skills
  4. Foster cultural awareness of the Francophone world
  5. Emphasize oral communication

OBJECTIVES:

COMMUNICATIVE OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to appropriately use the expressions concerning:

name, nationality, time, weather, how people are doing, asking for things, ordering food at a restaurant, family members, daily activities, describing people, age, physical condition, emotional condition, attention getters, opinion, transportation, giving directions, sports and games, shopping, expressing opinions, dealing with money, weekend activities, and household chores.

GRAMMAR OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to recognize, list, and appropriately use:

the alphabet, subject pronouns, regular –er verbs, the negative, verb + infinitive, the verb faire, the verb être, yes and no information questions with est-ce que, questions with inversion, singular and plural nouns, definite and indefinite articles, the expression avoir…ans, adjective formation, the use of c’est and il est, the expression il y a, avoir, aller, venir, mettre, préférer, acheter, payer, voir, vouloir, pouvoir, devoir, prendre, boire, connaître, dire, écrire, the negative article pas de, contractions with à and de, ordinal numbers, stress pronouns, possession, aller + infinitive, regular –re verbs, pronoun on, regular –ir verbs, comparisons, the imperative, expressions with avoir, passé compose of regular and irregular verbs, passé compose with être, partitive article, direct and indirect object pronouns, counting 1-1000.

View and listen to the Discovering French Video showing French-speaking youth, their families, and friends engage in a variety of everyday activities providing the class with a complete cultural and linguistic experience.

Listen to Discovering French Cassette Program which brings hundreds of authentic language samples into the classroom with distinctive listening and speaking activities such as listening and repeating, listening comprehension, speaking activities, pronunciation practice, and conversation models.

INSTUCTIONAL METHODS AND STRATEGIES:

The Discovering French program offers an integrated approach to language learning. Presentation and practice of functional expressions, vocabulary, and grammar structures are interwoven with cultural information, language learning tips and facilitated language. The technology, audiovisual material and additional print resources are integrated throughout to allow instruction to be adapted to a variety of learning styles.

ASSESSMENT METHODS:

The Discovering French program covers and integrates all skills of language acquisition. Each unit in the text integrates listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills therefore, each skill will be evaluated. For each unit the students will take a proficiency test in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The complete grade will include homework assignments, projects, tests, and the final exam.

COURSE OUTLINE

Units 1 through 4 will be taught during the first semester ending with a final comprehensive exam. Units 5 through 9 will be taught during the second semester ending with an accumulative final exam.
